Freising
The information centre of the Visitors Park displays a historical aircraft and supplies you with interesting information on the construction and the operating of the airport. A cinema offers free screenings of aviation-related films.
You want to get really close to the bustle of the airport? Why not take part in a tour of the apron – the meeting point is also located in the Visitors Park.
Thanks to the airport's excellent connection to public transport it is easy and fast to reach. When getting off the S-Bahn you will already find yourself in the middle of the terminal. Terminal 1 alone is laid out for a capacity of 20 million passengers a year and is around one kilometre long. Opposite Terminal 1 you will find the Visitors Park and the Visitors Hill.
Freising Cathedral is located about 40 kilometres from Munich city centre in a quiet and idyllic surrounding. Its outstanding beauty attracts thousands of visitors every year. In former times, the pompous building was used as the bishop's see of the Freising diocese before it was made co-cathedral by Pope Benedikt XVI. Today, it is the place where priests from the area are ordained.
The original cathedral was built already in 860 but was modified and enlarged over the centuries. For example, the Roman wooden ceiling was later replaced by a Gothic vault and – like the walls - decorated with beautiful, very true-to-life paintings on biblical stories. Extensive renovations in recent decades have helped preserve these artworks in their original form.
Another eyecatcher in the cathedral is the huge organ that majestically overlooks the central aisle. An organ concert in the cathedral is a very special experience and surely worth your while – dates are posted online. Or have a look into the cathedral's crypt where – in mythical atmosphere - you will find the pompous Korbinian shrine and the graves of former bishops.
You can look around the cathedral on your own or you can take a guided tour to get more information on the architecture and artworks of this beautiful building.
